The nature of oud

It begins as a wound

When an Aquilaria tree is injured, it protects itself by filling its heartwood with a dark, fragrant resin. Over many years, pale, light wood becomes dense, dark and aromatic. That resin-rich wood is oud.

Because it forms slowly and unpredictably, no two pieces are alike — each has its own colour, grain and scent. It has been treasured for centuries, from the Arabian Gulf to India, China and Japan.

Years in the making
Resin builds up slowly; in the wild it can take decades.
No two alike
Every piece has its own colour, grain and aroma.
Treasured for centuries
Burned as incense and distilled into oil across many cultures.

A buyer's eye

What makes a piece exceptional

Experienced buyers judge oud by a few qualities. Look for them in each lot's photos, video and description.

Resin

Resin-rich wood is darker and heavier. The densest pieces sink in water.

Aroma

The scent can be woody, sweet, smoky or animalic, and it opens up as the wood is warmed.

Origin

Where and how the tree grew — wild or cultivated, and in which region — shapes the character of the scent.

Rarity

Large, old and wild pieces are increasingly hard to find, and are prized by collectors.

Who OudBid is for

Traders & collectors: a clear, transparent way for buyers, traders and collectors to compete for the lots they want.

Our craft

We work with the wood ourselves

OudBid is more than an auction platform. Behind it is a team that works with agarwood every day — selecting raw wood, cleaning and grading it by hand, and crafting our own oud products.

  • Every lot inspected by our team before it is listed
  • Clear photos and video of the actual piece you bid on
  • Questions about a lot? Ask us before you bid

Higher-bid Alerts

Get notified as soon as another bidder places a higher bid, so you never miss the lot you want.

Clear Bidding Rules

Each lot has a starting price and a minimum bid increment, so every bid moves the price forward fairly.
